The Conversion of Iron Man, 68" x 57"
Oil on canvas
'This particular piece is a pastiche of the painting "The Conversion of Saint Paul" by Caravaggio. In this case instead of having Saul being struck down by the divine light of Christ we have our fallen superhero in his place...Iron Man.
The Christ figure descends from the heavens held by an angel while in the background an armoured warrior steps back in fear and a startled horse looks towards the light. The Christ figure reaches out to our superhero offering a smartphone in his hand. The 'conversion' is complete, it has completely permeated our superhero who reels back dramatically as his fallen helmet lays on the ground in a bed of flowers.
An oleander tree frames the scene, representing the transition from winter to summer, from dark to light. But it's beautiful appearance is deceptive. The oleander tree is also poisonous. Just like our modern day device...the smartphone.
Beautiful technology in our hands that create poisonous habits. The Christ figure represents the conversion to modern technology, from the dark ages we are now in the information age. The angel represents the youth who are born in the information age and completely embrace it. The elderly warrior represents a distant past which still fears this technology.
The fallen Iron Man represents those of us who know what life was like before the advent of the smart phone but had no choice but to embrace it.'
